Heron Preston has operated on the fringes of the New York fashion community for years, as a DJ and creative director. But he sure did get its attention last September, when he staged a shopping event with the New York City Department of Sanitation. Tapping into growing concerns about climate change and the current fad for logos of all kinds, Preston “enhanced” DSNY uniforms with screen-printed graphics and otherwise DIY-ed them, in the process raising awareness about a citywide initiative, 0x30, to send zero waste to landfills by 2030. It was easily the most effective see-now-buy-now event of the season. In January, he showed in Paris, and this June he launched womenswear.
